Todays Rant: Dish Network - Satellite TV - January 13, 2010 by admin

I pay $112.00 a month for Dish Network Satellite TV but I still have to sit through 15 minutes of TV Commercials for every half hour of programming and on top of that the TV commercials are loud as hell.  So basically I’m paying to be annoyed. Did I mention that of the 400+ channels I receive I only watch three? CNN, Discovery and History. When I called and asked if I could just pay for the three channels they told me to go fly a kite so I’m stuck paying for a lot of crap I don’t use.

To be fair to Dish Network I believe the same can be said for most TV no matter who your service provider is. I bet if Americans agreed to quit watching for a week we could force the programmers to change their evil ways but what are the chances of Americans ungluing themselves from the tube for more than a few hours? Not a chance, they have us where they want us. Fat dumb and glued to the couch.

Tonight I start my personal protest. No TV for a month. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Todays Rant: HP Fax Machine - January 12, 2010 by admin

I need to send a fax but my Hewlett Packard printer/fax machine tells me I am low on Magenta Ink and won’t let me send it.  WTF? You don’t need printer ink to send a fax.

Thanks HP,  for sending me out in the snow to buy another overpriced ink cartridge.

The UPC Bar Code Monopoly - January 7, 2010 by admin

To sell a product at most larger retailers in the USA you need a UPC Bar Code on your product.  Unfortunately there is only one company that controls the UPC Bar codes that the majority of these retailers require.  Anytime you have one company controlling an entire market you have a monopoly. Why is this a bad thing? Because this company can charge what ever they want for their product.  The UPC Barcode technology is nothing spectacular, the databases of product are also nothing very high tech yet this single company has its tentacles on almost every product sold in the USA. What type of prices are we talking about? My sister and I have a small Natural Soap company. This UPC Bar Code company wants $1000 to register and another $200 a year just for our small mom and pop company. As a company gets larger they charge additional fees.  This company does not print your UPC label for you, they don’t help advertise your product all they do is issue you a bar code and put you in a database and for this they want $1000 up front and $200 a year for the rest of the products life.  This certainly seems like highway robbery to me when I’ll build you an entire website and host it for a year for less than $1000 and spend a few weeks working on it. This company charges $1000 to click a few keys, issue you a code and transfer your product info into a database and then another $200 a year to keep you in the database. By the way the $1000 setup and $200 a year is just for the smallest of companies, larger companies pay significantly more.  To learn more about the UPC Barcode Monopoly take a look at their website.

Magento - Setting up E-mail templates - Argh - December 16, 2009 by admin

I’ve been setting up a Magento E-commence website for my sisters new Natural Soap company for the last two weeks and while I love many of the features of Magento there are also a number of items that make absolutely no sense.

Today’s Gripe:

Magento E-mail templates.

Just about the time you think you have the store up and running and start processing test orders you realize that the confirmation e-mails are branded with Magento icons, Magento  contact e-mails, Magento alt tags and the wording “Thank you for shopping at Demo Store”.

At first I thought this is no big deal, there has to be one section of the admin area where I can change all of these settings in one fell swoop. No such luck.  There are over 20 e-mail templates that have to be manually updated and then selected in another section of the admin to make them function properly. Rather than a two minute click of the keys to add a default email address, store name, logo image, alt tag and phone number prepare for at least half an hour even if you know exactly what you are doing and as much as two hours if you have to figure it out on your own + another hour of testing to make sure all of the e-mail forms work and go where they are supposed to when the submit button is hit.

In the end it’s all good, Magento is an $8000 piece of software if you purchase the enterprise edition and full support.  I guess if I get something almost as good for free I should not be complaining too much. Still, three hours is three hours that I could have been doing something productive like watching TV;)

Natural Soap Store: BarSoapNatural.com - November 29, 2009 by admin

I remember one of the 1990’s motivational speakers saying something to the effect of “Most successful people have failed at dozens of business plans before they were able to succeed and what separates them from most people is that 1. They actually try in the first place and 2. They continue to try after repeated failures.” If this is true maybe my third attempt will be a success.  I’ve done the keyword research, I’ve checked out the competition and found a supplier to work with.  BarSoapNatural.com will be an online Handmade Natural Soap store. I’m a big fan of exact match domain names and I was surprised at how few were available in the soap field. BarSoapNatural may be a mouthful but the traffic is decent and the competition is mild. I’m thankful that most of the other soap sellers are better at making soap than promoting it.

Best Website for a Builder - November 22, 2009 by admin

Subject: BIG BIG BIG NEWS!!!!

Team, just wanted to let everyone know that last night we won an unprecedented 5 National Awards from the NAHB (National Assoc of Home Builders).  These are the  most competitive and most prestigious awards that a U.S. Builder can get.  We won “Silver” awards and at the Builders Show we will find out if any of our Silvers turn into Golds.  They award the Gold Award (only 1 per category) to the best Silver Award winner in each category at the Builders Show every year.  Anyway, here’s what we won:

·         Best “On the Boards” Single Family Detached Home:  The Milton model at Heritage Creek:   Congrats to Rebecca on this one . . . . this was all Rebecca and she deserves this award.  This is the best looking house I think I have ever seen.  I tried for months to design this home and couldn’t get it right . . .  Rebecca really rocked it on this one.  Great work!!!

·         Best Product Design for a Custom Home:  Robinson Residence (Echelon):  Great work Tim Tice on this one and nice work to Lance and especially Mike Criswell who pretty much lived in this house for 10 months.

·         Best Interior Merchandising for a Model Priced Under $500,000:  The Marina model at the Retreat at Love Creek:  AWESOME JOB Joni . . . this was all you!!!  That house looks awesome!

·         Best Website for a Builder:  Echelon Custom Homes:  We have Ivana, Jeremy, and Mike Brown to thank for this.  They did an incredible job.  I think we have the best website for a custom builder in the country and I would not be the least bit surprised if we win the Gold on this one.  Great work guys!!

·         Best Clubhouse:  Independence Hall at Independence:  This was a team effort involving a lot of people.  Nice work to Pat Mulligan for building the Clubhouse and Great work to Jordan for the awesome Christmas decorations.

Anyway, I couldn’t be more proud of our company and everything we’ve accomplished together.  To put some perspective on this:  No other DE builder has won a single National Award in the last 5 years and we won 5 IN ONE YEAR!!!!   This is incredible!

This is the life and company I’ve always dreamed we’d have together and I hope all of you are having as much fun as I am.

 You guys Rock!!!!

What the land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy. - November 18, 2009 by admin

I’ve never been into politics. I’d rather work with my hands than my mouth, but enough is enough. I don’t like the socialist road the current administration is taking us down.  To tell the truth I was not a big fan of the previous administration either for starting a war for bogus reasons and stealing our personal privacy rights. If you take all of the yearly profits from all of the fortune 500 companies and add them together they do not equal a Trillion Dollars. How will America ever pay back the Trillions of Dollars it is currently borrowing from other countries?

Maybe it’s time to join the Libertarian Party of Delaware?

Are you a Libertarian? Take the test.

What a Morning! - November 17, 2009 by admin

Rehoboth Beach Flooding

Rehoboth Flood After

Recently we experienced a nasty nor’easter and what felt like two weeks of rain. There was a good deal of Coastal flooding and I myself had a good deal of water pooling in my yard.
As I was about to leave the house this morning I took a look into my crawlspace access and noticed almost a foot of water.  This would not be the first time I had rainwater accumulate in this location.  To remedy this I took the fountain pump from our pond and stuck it in the access expecting it to take less than two minutes to remove the water.  After five minutes and a hundred gallons of water I realized the water level had not gone down at all. Removing the access hatch I realized there was actually a good 12 inches of water under the entire house.  To make matters worse one of my five naughty cats decided it would be a good idea to jump into the water filled crawlspace only to land upon the semi-floating plastic moisture barrier which wrapped itself around the cat and started to pull her under water about 15 feet from the access area.  I could let the cat drown or go in after her. I ended up crawling in up to my chin in the cold dark crawl space and scooped her up from the water. As thanks she scratched the $hit out of my hand.

All’s well that ends well.  The cat is safe. The crawl space is almost dry and we will have a new liner and dehumidifier installed later this week. No damage was done to the house other than the brick getting wet.
